Megalosaurus
“great lizard”The first dinosaur ever named, in 1824, decades before the word 'dinosaur' existed
Overview
Megalosaurus is an extinct genus of large carnivorous theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Middle Jurassic in what is now southern England. Although fossils from other areas have been assigned to the genus, the only certain remains of Megalosaurus come from Oxfordshire and date to the late Middle Jurassic.

Why it matters
- William Buckland described it from a jaw and bones found in Oxfordshire slate quarries.
- The 1854 Crystal Palace sculpture shows it as a four-legged, bear-like monster, the best guess of the time.
- Richard Owen coined 'Dinosauria' in 1842 for Megalosaurus, Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus.
